چکیده

Sudden changes in loudness because of loud commercials and variations in loudness levels between programs have been a major source of nuisance for the consumers. With the transition to Digital TV, loudness related issues have not only continued but are on the rise. Traditional techniques of loudness measurement are ineffective for digital broadcast. Techniques for digital broadcast need to be objective and accurate. More importantly, these new loudness measurement techniques need to be mandated to control loudness for a consistent consumer experience. Governments around the world are realizing the need to regulate loudness to protect consumer interests. International organizations such as ITU, ATSC, and EBU have formulated recommendations specifying concrete thresholds and restrictions for loudness measurement. This paper discusses some traditional loudness measurement techniques and shortcomings associated with these techniques. The paper provides an overview of ITU BS.1770 loudness algorithm followed by basic requirements of CALM Act. The paper highlights the need for automated solutions that can meter the loudness and accordingly normalize the audio to ensure conformance to regulations. The paper concludes with a proposal for loudness control method that can be adopted in a file-based workflow.

Evaluation of Distortion and Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emission in Tinnitus Patients with Normal Hearing

Introduction: Tinnitus is a perception of sound without external source. The exact etiology of tinnitus is not fully understood, although some researchers believe that the condition usually starts in the cochlea. The aim of this study was to determine the potential contribution of outer hair cell dysfunction to chronic tinnitus, by application of Distortion-Product Evoked Otoacoustic Emission (...

Sequential Effects in Loudness

This paper reviews the effects of one sound on the loudness of a following sound. The following sound is usually perceived as softer than when presented in isolation. At least five sequential effects can be identified. (1) Simple loudness adaptation: the earlier part of an ongoing sound results in a decline in the loudness of later parts. (2) Ipsilaterally induced adaptation: increments in the ...

Sound Quantity and Quality of Sampo 3065 Combine Harvester

ABSTRACT- Noise is considered as one of the most debilitating conditions in farming operations. In this study, a number of factors affecting the noise generated by Sampo 3065 combine harvesters were evaluated. Factors were engine speed and gear ratio for combines with and without original cabins. A factorial experiment arranged as a completely randomized design with four replicates was used. Re...

Application of a New Hearing Model for Determining the Sound Quality of Sound Events

A loudness measurement which takes account of the spectral and temporal structure of a sound event, better than the A-weighted SPL, has advantages. Nevertheless, it is not universally accepted because the loudness measurement does not allow a complete judgment of complex sound events comparable to human hearing. In addition to loudness, there are other psychoacoustic parameters such as sharpnes...
